Windows Mobile Versus iPhone

I am so torn over my mobile device. I have been using an AT&T 8525 running Windows Mobile for the last year and overall, I love it. At the same time, there are some limitations and the iPhones that everyone in the office flaunts around are pretty damn attractive. I’ve been building a mental list of the pros and cons of each in my head. Note, that my hands-on use of the iPhone totals less than an hour.

To summarize my thoughts:

  • I want the better syncing w/Mac, the large touchscreen, the sleek hardware and the better video/audio support that comes with the iPhone.
  • I want the native application support, the offline apps and WLS mapping and 3G network of Windows Mobile

I’ll be watching the moves of Apple in February as they are supposed to be releasing and SDK and will likely announce a second generation iPhone at the same time.

Windows Mobile iPhone
Mapping Microsoft’s Windows Live Search:

  1. Designed to work on Windows Mobile
  2. Integrates with my address book
  3. Supports voice-to-text recognition
  4. Faster than Google Maps
  5. GPS support (built-in with the tilt)
 Google Maps:

  1. Flashy interface
  2. Crippled by the slow edge network
  3. Uses the touchscreen to navigate
Applications
  1. Full SDK for .NET programmers
  2. Lots of free and paid apps exist
  3. Apps can run when offline
    • I frequently am not conected either when there’s a weak signal or when I am ina tunnel commuting via train.
  1. No native app support yet, only web apps.
  2. Web apps require a connection
Media
  1. Poor battery life when playing media
  2. Stutters when playing video
  3. No good podcast support
  1. Designed to play video and audio well
  2. 4-8 gigs of storage
  3. Supports podcasts (via iTunes)
Interface
  1. Touchscreen works with stylus or finger
  2. Pull-out QWERTY keyboard
  3. Poor interface for phone dialing
  4. Bulky hardware design

  2. Easy to use
  3. Slow for typing on virtual keyboard

Syncing
  1. Syncs well with Windows
  2. Syncs really well with Exchange
  3. Syncs poorly with a Mac
    • I am still searching for a free solution to sync my contacts and calendar. SyncMate works for contacts only so far.
