Today, I launched Yahoo! Mail and found that my account has finally been moved onto the new version announced a few weeks back. One feature, that appears to be brand new, is Yahoo! Mail Shortcuts. The client will scan the body of messages and highlight text formatted in common ways. Currently, email addresses, phone numbers and physical addresses are supported. Physical addresses can be mapped and all can be saved into contacts. This “mashup” technology is one of the features touted by the Zimbra mail client, recently purchased by Yahoo! so I expect that we’ll soon see the recognition of UPS/FedEx tracking numbers and Amazon order numbers.
