I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s a personality flaw, but I don’t get sucked into all of these voyeurism crazes. I haven’t spent more than 1 hour on YouTube, I’ve really never been onto MySpace or Friendster or anything of the like. I just can’t get sucked into these time wasters that, as all reports show, millions of other people do. It’s not that I’m not online. To the contrary, I am in front of a PC and on the Internet 10+ hours per day. This weekend I spent 30+ hours online. But I wasn’t in forums or watching video or other stuff that I hate to call a waste of time. I was building a website, reading about interesting tech news in an futile attempt to stay “in the know” and listening to podcasts from CNET, TWIT and NPR.
Wow, I didn’t realize until just now that I listen almost entirely to acronyms

So, following up on the current hype of Justin.tv, I went to the site. It’s boring. Sorry, but it’s true. This experiment/business is based entirely around the idea that people want to spend a significant amount of time watching live video of someone they don’t even know. Sure, I watched a few minutes of the video, clicked through the blog and bit and poked around to get a feeling for the site, but I won’t go back. Sorry, I just have better things to do with my time. I dedicate a lot of time to my hobbies (tho never enuf), but more and more I am finding that these require the following.
- Be something that I am passionate about, such as cycling or technolgy or family or friends
- Be of a high production value, such as a feature film or a television show or a podcast
Some examples straight from this weekend include:
- 3 hours on a bike saddle because I love it and because I have to lose the gut
- 2o hours building a personal site because I love the web and this project
- 3 hours with friends over dinner because I know that they’ll always be there for me
- 2 hours walking my dog, because he needed to get out of the house
- 2 hours playing with Plazes because it’s cool
- 4 hours trying futily to catch up on my blog subscriptions
- 5 hours running misc errands because the house doesn’t take care of itself
I guess it boils down to my need to feel productive…. all the time. Sitting in front of the PC to watch Justin is the opposite of productive. Frankly, so is watching Survivor or Amazing Race, two shows that I’ve fallen out of favor with.

so is notifying people where you are via plazes that different from justin.tv filming himself eating dinner or whatever? or is it just a difference of degre?
Great blog — keep it up. Cycling must run in the family.
